Storing drinking water in copper is a long-standing Ayurvedic household practice — the vessel is filled overnight and the water drunk in the morning. What to put in it
- Plain drinking water, cold or room temperature.
- Not lemon water, juice, fizzy drinks or buttermilk — acidic liquids react with copper.
- Not boiling water.
Care and cleaning
- Rinse with warm water after use and air-dry with the cap off.
- Every week or two, rub the inside and outside with half a lemon dipped in salt, then rinse well. Tamarind paste works the same way.
- Not dishwasher safe. Do not use abrasive scourers.
- Copper darkens with use — that patina is normal, and a lemon-and-salt clean brings the shine back.

Is there anything I shouldn't put in it?

How do I clean a copper bottle?

Can I drink hot water in a copper bottle?

Try sticking a small magnet to the bottle. If the magnet fails to stick, that points to copper rather than a plated or mixed metal. Colour is the other giveaway: unlike the grey of most metals, real copper has a distinctive reddish-brown tone and a subtle matt shine.
The colour is changing — is that a fault?
No, that is copper doing what copper does. Pure copper develops a darker patina over weeks of use, especially where it is handled. A lemon-and-salt clean brings the shine back. A bottle that never tarnishes at all is usually lacquered or plated rather than pure.
